The much hyped Google press conference on January 5, 2010 began officially at 10:05 AM. There were many things said beginning with a few words about the state of the OHA, the open hand set alliance. The speakers moved on from there to discuss the myTouch with CDMA and many other features. Next they discussed the state of Droid their flagship device.

Highlights From the Press Conference:

The Opening and Some History

* The open hand set alliance has gained thirteen new members this year. Among the most notable of these new members are Freescale and China Telecom.

* Not long after announcing the new members Google representatives began detailing changes in operations and equipment from the previous year. One year after the announcement of the OHA, HTC and T-mobile combined to launch the G1.

* Next came some talk about the myTouch with complete CDMA which was followed by some discussion about their flagship device the Droid. They noted that there were currently more than twenty devices spread across forty-eight countries and nineteen specific languages.

* They went on to explain that over the course of 2009 they released four software selections to test the compatibility of many devices with the upcoming android launch. They wished to make certain everything would run smoothly.

* They made what seemed to be a snarky comment on how people were more interested in using the android search features than the standard T9 text entry method. They expressed a statistic of thirty times more usage of android services for those functions in compared the standard system.

* They speak highly of their OHA members and the equipment or software packages they created for a few minutes before getting into the topic people actually came to hear about. At this time it is approximately 10:17 AM.

Beyond History and Into the Current Year

* The Nexus One, a phone that has been of incredible hype online recently, was finally spoken of. Erick Tseng the senior product manager on the project mentioned the following about the Nexus One's official hardware.

Appearance and Graphical Concept Software

1) The Nexus one has a 3.7 inch AMOLED display; it uses a 1GHz snapdragon processor, and a multi-color LED notification beneath the trackball.

2) It comes with a compass, a GPS, an accelerometer, and also includes both light and proximity sensors.

3) They went on to explain that the Google Nexus One was roughly as thick as a number two pencil and weighs about as much as a Swiss Army knife.

4) The phone comes with a five megapixel camera with LED flash, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and stereo Bluetooth. The device also has dual noise canceling suppressors, one located on the back and the other located on the bottom.

5) It was officially announced that the device will use the Android 2.1 technology, an upgrade of the current Eclair OS. The number of panes was expanded and several widgets were greatly improved, weather widgets specifically seemed to become better. The weather widget allows minute-by-minute weather updates on humidity and temperature.

6) Dynamic, active backgrounds can be used on the Google Nexus One.

7) The next launch they are working on will involve a 3Dapp launcher that pushes the limits of the wallpaper category of downloads and accessorizing. The opening scene from Star Wars was brought up as a, for instance, of what that technology will be like.

8) The Iris was worked with a bit on the phone to allow for better imagery when taking pictures. The background was synced with Picasa Web.

Voice Features and Software

1) The somewhat age-old questions that revolve around finding directions by voice and having your spoken words directly correlate with words that appear on screen have been answered. The Nexus One can directly copy what you say to the screen. It can even determine the difference between punctuation and casual speech.

2) The revealed a sneak peak of Google Earth that will appear on the Nexus One.

3) The voice activation feature combined with Google Earth will allow you to find specific areas simply by asking the mobile phone aloud.

Purchasing Information

Currently the Nexus One is slated to be unlocked, but T-mobile has already joined up to offer a major discount for the use of the device. Unlocked from Google the phone costs five hundred thirty dollars American. If the phone is purchased through T-mobile it only costs one hundred eighty dollars American. Verizon is slated to join up in the spring. Vodafone will also be joining later in the year. As of this launch the Google Nexus One will be sold in the US, the UK, Singapore, and Hong Kong as the test markets.

General Information Time

Droid will be able to use many, if not all, of the software programs and apps that the Nexus One will use currently. The Nexus One is just the first in a wave of new "superphones" that will be released in the future. They use the term superphones to delineate the newer generation phones from smartphones.

The Android 2.1 release has so many 3D capacities that it is not one hundred percent backwards compatible with other devices. This means that some droid phones will upgrade and others will not.

In Conclusions

A great many rumors were settled about the Google Nexus One. The future of the smartphone seems to be an ever increasing trend toward becoming pocket sized computers. Android 2.1 is for real even if it is in general only a minor increase in capacity, mostly 3D capability. The Nexus One is an unlocked device that can be bought directly through T-mobile and soon to be purchasable through Verizon, Vodafone, and several others for an incredible discount.

Overall it was not a massive information dump by the people at Google. However, it did answer the rumors and set the stage for the next generation of phone technology.
